9/9/10

Things are pulling together quite nicely for a tremendous evening next week at Hill 99. Jim's done all the hard work, organising the run, liaising with Forres Harriers, whipping up an ice cream van out of nowhere - now it's your part, simply turn up and walk, jog or run. We are looking at the possibility of meeting at the Maggot about 5.40pm to share transport.

HALF MARATHON 2010

Well done to the 185 runners who braved the warm and very windy conditions to run this year's race and thanks to all those who took time out to help.

Congratulations to Lizzie for being first female home and Lizzie, Morag and Mo who took home the team trophy.

Full results and prizewinner list can be found from the link on the Nairn Half Marathon page.

ABERNETHY 10 MILE RESULTS AND REPORT BY MORAG

On Saturday 14th August, Kenny, Carol and I left Nairn and headed to Nethybridge for the Abernethy Highland Games and the RSPB 10 Mile Race.  On arrival at Nethy we encountered a couple of problems.  Firstly we got stuck behind the pipe bands while they got themselves organised, then as we entered the car park we got stuck behind a foreign camper van which was stuck in mud and being pushed out.  Couldn’t get back out as the traffic behind was backed up.  Then a bolt had dropped out of the back door of our car and we couldn’t get the door shut! Amazingly one of our number safety pins came in very useful and we got the door shut, and it has remained shut ever since! Eventually the van was pushed out of the mud and we managed to get parked. Colin and David (Austin) then appeared too.

It was a pleasant day as we queued to pay £6, our entry to the games, which also covered our entry to the 10 mile race.  Having registered, and changed, there was just enough time to have a wander round the games.  Just as we were lining up to start the sun came bursting through!

101 people started off with 3 circuits of the ring, then out the field, onto the road and up the first of many, many hills. The roads are narrow and very quiet, but a lot of the race takes part in woodland, where it had obviously been raining heavily as there were many puddles to dodge, and some right across the track. The sun was out in spells but it was nice alternating between woodland and open road.  There are 3 very welcome water stations on the way round and the course is well sign posted. Eventually on returning to Nethy you can hear the announcer and bagpipes as the course takes you alongside the games field, in through the pay gate, and 200 metres along the grass to the finish line.

We 5 from Nairn Road Runners were pleased with our performances.  Colin in a time of  71 mins 50 sec,  David 79mins 58 sec, Kenny 82 min 21 sec, Morag 86 mins 24 sec, and Carol 95 mins 36 sec who had a better time than previous years.

I understand this race is good practice for the Nairn Half, which I think should be re named the RSPB 10 Mile HILL RACE!!

We weary 3 finished the afternoon off with a lovely hot donut, and thankfully had an uneventful journey home.

BRORA 10K - REPORT FROM LIZZIE

Sunday 11th July 2010 - Three Nairn Roadrunners travelled the 75miles north to Brora for the 10k - Jim Connelly, John Ferrie and Lizzie O’Grady-Scott. On arrival at the Brora Heritage Centre (with its award winning toilets!) there were a dozen people fighting with a large white tent which was threatening to fly off. Once the tent was up registration was very smooth and friendly. There were around 80 entrants for the 10k, with others taking part in a 5k fun run or a walk. The tent provided excellent shelter from a torrential downpour only minutes from the start of the race (1pm).

The start was about 400m up a single track road from the Heritage Centre and finish line. The course was gently undulating with one steep little hill midway, and was well marked in km. There were four water stations on the well marshalled route. The wind was wild – which was very helpful on the way out – and tough on the way back in! The finish was up a steep wee hill but most people still managed to come through the gate smiling.

John had also run the Forres Highland Games 10k the day before. Jim reported very nearly the same time as he had run at Brora for the last couple of years despite this year’s wild, windy conditions. Lizzie got a PB and was very happy to be 1st female in. There was an excellent spread of sarnies and cakes with our tea. All in all a grand day out.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN

A big congratulations to Mary-Ann and Stuart Thompson on the arrival of EWAN ANDREW THOMPSON, 9lb 5oz. Mum tired but both doing well (Stuart didn't say how he was doing!) All the best from all at the Road Runners.

The course took the runners back along the Cullen road for a mile before heading up what felt like a never ending hill, then winding back to the A98 and returning to Portsoy via a few back streets and a farm yard !! After the race, all the runners headed to the boat festival for re-fuelling and sunbathing. The 10k was also chip timed and had 3 much needed water stations en route.

LAIRIG GHRU RACE - REPORT FROM JENNY

Myself, Gordie and Ian Cassidy made the drive to Braemar on Sunday for the 28 mile Lairig Ghru Hill race. Despite it initially feeling all wrong because Malcolm wasn't there (he had to be offshore this year), we were soon heading out of Braemar under a blazing sun. Ian disappeared up ahead, with Gordie and I settling into a faster pace than I would of chosen, with him insisting that we needed to cover the easier ground as fast a possible before we hit the rougher stuff.

Once we got into the Lairig Ghru proper Gordie ran ahead of me but made sure he stayed in sight, a reassuring blob of orange up ahead. He shouted back at me occasionally to "keep pushing on while the going's good!" I think I was probably 3 hours into the race before it dawned on me that he was going to say that all the way through. It was hard going underfoot with the narrow, boulder strewn path full of rocks that were constantly trying to trip you up as you tried to run over and around them, and my legs started to get really tired from repeatedly having to lift up and over rocks.

Eventually we reached the infamous boulder fields, which Gordie had described as like running over the rocks that make up the sea-defences along the Nairn Golf course. I'd assumed he was exaggerating. He wasn't. Despite being reassured that there would be no snow in the pass, nobody bothered to tell the snow and halfway through the boulder fields we hit a load of it. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as compacted snow proved considerably easier to run on than wet jagged rocks! I fell going through the boulderfields but managed a 'Danny Bow roll', ending up on my back facing the wrong direction and with just a bruised hip for my bother. The next bit seemed to go on forever, with hips screaming that hill running wasn't in their job description thankyou very much and that they really, really, had to stop now. Unfortunately I still needed them for the last 10 miles down to Aviemore. I managed to fall a second time on a completely flat path in Rothiemurchas, tripping over my own foot (an achievement in itself).

We somehow managed the last bit along Aviemore High street without Gordie having to stop and carry me, although I think at one point he was seriously tempted. In the end it took Ian (whom we never saw again after the start) 4hrs 21, and it took myself and Gordie 5 hrs 25, with Gordie obviously slowed down considerably by virtue of his keeping an eye on me, for which I will be eternally grateful!
